Opportunity

Upstream Tech builds software for making decisions about the planet. We are looking for a talented team member to expand the reach and impact of HydroForecast, a global water forecast service.  HydroForecast is a growth-stage product with meaningful early commercial traction including a number of industry leader customers and large, multi-year contracts.

This is a key leadership opportunity as we seek a team member with a strong sales closing track record to significantly ramp up our ARR over the next few years.  You will wear many hats in this role: owning large enterprise sales processes with utilities and other customer types, designing and leading go-to-market strategy in new markets, managing and growing the sales team, tracking sales performance, serving as a liaison with the engineering team as we grow the product, and guiding marketing strategy.

The right candidate is driven by our mission, has utility hardware or SaaS sales experience, has experience managing a team, has an understanding of energy utilities and/or water issues, and should demonstrate excellent independent work ethic and a desire to work closely with a driven, remote team. We expect this to be a Director or VP-level position, dependent upon experience.

Role

As a leader on our Growth & Partnerships team, this individual will drive the sales and growth of one of our key products, HydroForecast in partnership with the existing sales and business development team members.

Responsibilities

  • Close sales to meet or exceed our annual and quarterly sales targets.

  • Lead sales opportunities and relationship development with key customers in existing and new markets, executing strategic deals that provide significant commercial growth

  • Set sales goals, and track commercial progress and execution

  • Provide hands-on management and mentorship to the sales team, helping them close deals to meet or exceed our sales targets

  • Coordinate with our marketing team to set marketing and content development  strategy in order to support outbound sales processes and increase quality inbound leads

  • Plan and lead execution of go-to-market strategy in new markets or with new product offerings

  • Engage with customers in new markets and track industry trends; and provide regular feedback and input to both the product and commercial teams to inform product development and financial forecasts

  • Some travel to conferences and sales meetings. Most presentations will be remote video presentations and phone meetings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., business, environmental management, data science, engineering, energy); master’s degree preferred

  • Industry knowledge, connections and experience in hydropower, the utility industry, government, engineering firms, renewable energy, and/or water more broadly

  • Proven sales track record: 10+ years work experience in sales and business development, ideally with utility hardware or SaaS products. We are open to strong candidates at different stages of career progression.

  • Experience leading a team, managing sales performance, and setting business direction for a team or product

  • Experience closing large, complex deals, all the way through contracting

  • Experience with and comfort working with technology applications

  • Located in a United States time zone

You’d be a good fit if

  • You want to work at a growing, impact-focused company. We measure our success with a triple bottom line and put our principles before profits.

  • You're pragmatic and want to get things done without sacrificing quality.

  • You're humble, empathetic, and understand that giving and receiving honest direct feedback helps everyone to grow.

  • You’re a great communicator, and can stay organized and manage your own time.

  • You’re excited to work in a remote-first environment.

If you’re passionate about water, climate, and renewable energy, we encourage you to apply if you don’t meet every qualification.
