Opportunity

In this role, you will serve as the finance leader for our organization, overseeing accounting, finance, and some operational responsibilities. The right candidate is a seasoned finance / accounting professional, has deep comfort with technology and integration/automation of finance and accounting systems,  is driven by our mission, is highly organized and an excellent communicator, has interest/experience in energy and environmental issues,  and demonstrates excellent independent work ethic and a desire to work closely with a driven, remote team.

Role

As a member of our Operations team, this individual will own the finance and accounting functions within the organization and be a key collaborator with the CEO and COO on business strategy and planning, as well as supporting any future fundraising rounds. We are seeking a candidate who is both a talented “do-er” as well as a leader with experience in a growth-stage company – willing to help get the right systems in place for scale and complete tasks, while also thinking about how we strategically grow our finance organization over time.

Initially this person will report to the CFO, with a plan to report to the CEO within 3-6 months. This is a fully remote position located within the United States. 

Responsibilities

  • Leadership: 

    • Partner with Upstream Tech’s senior team and be responsible for financial analysis relating to strategy, cash management, and scenario planning to inform strategic decision-making

    • Provide reporting to CEO/management on key business indicators, including cash, budget vs. actuals, burn rates, margins, and forecasting - and provide insight on implications for resource allocation and investments

    • Own the annual company budget and quarterly re-forecasting process, with input from leaders across the team

    • Own the accounting organization/vendors and activities in the company, including but not limited to: managing internal or external accounting personnel,  ensuring accurate and timely monthly closings and internal and external reporting, leading and ensuring adherence to accounting policies and controls and overseeing all tax and audit functions.

  • Board and investors:

    • Responsible for ongoing communications with and reporting to investors, banks and other capital providers

    • Own financial inputs into board communications, reporting, and board meeting

    • Support fundraising activities as needed in the future, in close partnership with the CEO

  • Operations: 

    • Create seamless, tech-enabled systems for tracking company OKRs and metrics; manage OKR reporting across the organization and with the board/investors

    • Oversee, implement, and troubleshoot  back end systems integrations (e.g., between Stripe and Quickbooks or between Trinet and Fidelity). Continue to evaluate for and implement opportunities to remove barriers to scaling our SaaS business

    • Manage strategy and relationships with relevant vendors for company insurance coverage, 401K plan, equity management platform, and other vendors, as needed.

    • Work with Upstream Tech’s  outside counsel, as appropriate, to oversee legal matters including contracting, financial transactions, and other legal matters as they arise. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in accounting or finance - MBA/masters preferred

  • CPA designation preferred

  • 10+ years work experience, ideally with experience in finance, revenue / sales operations,  or strategy function in a scaling organization

  • Experience as a finance or accounting leader in a SaaS company preferred

  • Must be tech-oriented, with comfort and familiarity across platforms to help create seamless integrations

  • Experience and comfort with creating, manipulating, and maintaining  financial models 

  • Familiarity with energy and environmental issues and enthusiasm for our environmental mission

  • Flexibility and comfort in ambiguity - willing to roll up your sleeves wherever it’s needed in a dynamic role and organization. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Self-starter with strong attention to detail

  • Located in the United States. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship from Upstream Tech.

Location 

Remote. We conduct business using technologies like Slack and video conferencing. We get together for an annual in-person trip to work, bond, and celebrate our successes.

Compensation & Benefits

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, market location, business needs, other compensation components, and/or market demands. The starting base salary range for this role is  $150,000-200,000/year. This range may be modified in the future. 

This role will be eligible for a performance incentive bonus related to individual and company performance. 

In addition to competitive salaries, we offer equity to new employees and incentive compensation based on team performance. We expect equity to be a meaningful component of compensation for this role to align with broader company and leadership incentives.
